Ahh. Summer is here.

Unfortunately for me, I still have a lot of stuff to do. So most of my time is spend in the office.

The windows are facing south.

No AC.

A refrigerator creates heat.

So does computers.

All in all, the office is hot! Most days between 28-30 degrees Celsius (thats 82-86 for you weird people).

The obvious solution would be to buy a standard electrical fan. Annoyingly, the local supermarket wants 150,- DKK (thats like 25 “bucks”).

Instead, I decided to do some procrastination, and try to build my own for about 1/3 of the price.

Turn out the local electronics store had 10 case fans for 60,- DKK (again, more or less equal to $10)!

(I got the box for free!)

Time to create a mega-fan!

Step 1: The tools

Tape, wire, cutting tools, scissor and stuff.

Step 2: Combine the fans

I used what I had at hand: wire!

(2 by 2)

(Then 3 by 3)

Step 3: Wire up the connectors

This took some time. Quite a lot of wires!

(Two down, 7 to go!)

(All wired up, big block of connectors and tape!)

Step 4: Power it up!

I have a ATX PSU on my desk just for this kind of projects. These PSUs are magic, 3.3v, 5V, 12V even -12V and lots and lots of Amp!

(It’s spinning!)

All the fans worked on the first try! (Well almost, one soldering fell of after couple of minutes, but that was an easy fix!)

Step 5: Conclusion

Worst idea EVER!

Computer case fans are created for cooling… computers. NOT humans.

The monster fan is silent, but creates practically no airflow.

Back to the drawing board!

A logical choice might be on the top is a shelf…

Logic be dammed! We put them on the bottom!

(Pure magic)

(Thats standard danish beer hanging from the shelf)

(Look! magnets!)

These magnets are called neodymium magnets and are incredible powerful!

The easiest place to find some are inside old hard drives. Or buy them online like we did!
